Why should I hire Lasting Voices to conduct a family history rather than do it myself?
Time. Complete life histories take four to eight hours to recount. Precision sound editing,
if desired, can also be extremely time-consuming. Accurate interview
transcription takes four to six times longer than the length
of the tape.
Professionalism. During a personal interview, people often feel more comfortable speaking to
a neutral, attentive professional rather than to close family members. The narrator is also
less likely to skip over things he or she assumes a family member would already know, and the result
is a more complete, in-depth story. An experienced interviewer can also provide subtle direction
and flow to keep an interview moving and on track.
Equipment. Lasting Voices uses the highest quality portable digital recording equipment,
as well as professional editing and transcription tools. We offer end products in a variety of
media (CD, cassette, paper) to ensure durability.
Why use audio recording rather than video?
For better stories. Audio recorders are less intrusive than video recorders, and less intimidating.
Once the interview starts, people tend to forget about them. An audio taped interview becomes an
opportunity for relaxed, extended recollection and real conversation, not just a performance for the camera.
We highly recommend video recording as a supplement to-- rather than substitution for--audio recording.
A word on our philosophy:
We believe nothing better evokes the unique essence and individuality of a person than the sound of their
voice. Most of us save visual images of those important to us, but their voices are just as special.
Imagine how interesting it would be to hear our ancestors describing
their lives. Technology now allows us to create just such a lasting legacy for our families and communities.
Honor and preserve the sounds and stories of your family for future generations!
